    I'm always saying every RUclips guitar channel should have a DB level meter so we can get an actual idea of how loud something is when they are mic'ing in room playing.

    I run my Origin 50 head into a Weber Mass III, then into an 8-ohm 2X12 pine cab loaded with a UK-made Celestion V30 and a Weber Silver Bell. From my own personal experience, I agree that the Origin series as used by most people (turn up the gain, master volume to taste/ before neighbours complain) will simply NOT yield the plexi tone in your head. The pre-amp gain alone will sound congested and unrefined.
    Instead, because I have the attenuator, I can crank the master volume, and bring up the gain to taste. Then I will use the presence, TMB tone stack and tilt control to dial in the sound I want. These 5 controls allow me to set the amp up for ANY guitar I can throw at it: Les Paul, SG, Strat, Tele inclusive. Just watch the treble and presence controls; this amp can get bright very quickly.
    For those who are predisposed to hating on the amp simply because it's not made in England, get yourself a good attenuator and try the approach I mentioned above, and be objective.

    Hay you totally missed the fact that the Origins have a superb built in attenuator.

      Its pretty rubbish tbh. Anything less than High and you lose all the bass. It is however better than the crappy in-line resistor garbage other maker's use .. The only thing that really lets these amps down is the DI, which is junk. Every other aspect its a 10/10. The PCB and components look pretty good too. Good enough for at least 20 years hard use. Can't go wrong for $250.

      @@cgavin1 I don’t know About that, I have It on the 5 and 10 watt setting most of the time and I get plenty of bass I run mids on 5 bass on 4.5 and treble on 6, presence on 2.5 master on 4-5 and gain 7.5 pulled out

    • @leonthompson8988

      What all these affordable amps have is input signal attenuation. Full power is no resistance to your guitar signal. The power selector is a variable potentiometer to cut input signal. An output transformer with multiple power taps is cost prohibitive for these amps

    • @RByrne
      @RByrne 2 года назад +1

      No, the attenuator in this is terrible. I picked up the 20w head the other day and I'm pretty disappointed overall. The EQ is totally useless, there's far too much treble, and the boost doesn't seem to do anything at all. There's no "plexi" sound unless the master is cranked fully with the Gain, but then it get Muddy. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I don't think so from some of the reviews. I'll keep playing with it and see if I find some useful tones.

    I bought a late 60's Plexi head in 71 and played it for years. I needed the money to get back home. I recently bought the Origin 50 head, you will be glad to know that although there is some difference in tone it is quite negligible. A Plexi is Plexi. This one not being sold ...EVER! A bullet proof tone that still sounds great after decades. Other amps come and go. So think about
    you buy this amp but once ...no more trading it in to suit the fashion of the day.

Yeah you played the LP but for a total of like 30 seconds then switched right back to the Fender... All I can say is finally Marshall puts out an amp that has that classic tone and is relatively cheap! It's about damn time! I have the Origin 20, had the 50 but sold it for the 20.
    After some study realized the 50 was just too much for my use, and while the 20 uses the exact same tube configuration but runs them at a lower voltage to get less power and thus the tubes will last longer it was the perfect size and tone for me! If ya need LOUD then ya also need a PA and so mic the damn thing already, HELLO! Most combos SUCK IMO, cuz sometimes ya want to run a certain speaker for distorted tones and a different one for clean tones, AND swapping speakers is super ez with a head and cabs! + I hate 10" speakers, any amps tone can be enhanced by using a 12" speaker, and sometimes a 15".

    I just got this amp in. It has barely any gain at all, in order to get a proper chugging rock sound the volume and gain has to be way up, dimed in my case with a HSS strat. However, it does have a beautiful clean sound that stays clean if you need it to, and it takes dirt pedals very well, so metal players can still get this to work, though I'd suggest a high gain amp to begin with.

      Nowt wrong with a good 10" speaker.No.1 upgrade on the 10" equipped Cub 10 is to replace the speaker with a Jensen C10, Mod 10-70 or Mod 10-50. Other speakers are available!.The Pro Junior is another amp running a 10". Both it and the Cub are around 15Watts. The difference between 15W and 20W is about a gnats fart through pantyhose in the grand scheme of things.
      The Celestion Ten-30 isn't bad once it has been run in for hours. Many hours. Like the Seventy-80, it's a much derided speaker that doesn't give of its best until it has softened up through being driven quite hard with a fuzz to get those violent waves through it.However, could you stand the sound it makes for the hours it takes to soften up?, would you just rip it out and Jensenify it asap to get the sound up?10"'s aren't bad. There are some fantastic 10"'s and a few great amps have had 10"'s from the factory.Given the size of the 20c though, maybe a new, 1/2" ply baffleboard cut for a 12" is in it's future for many owners.

    I played the 50w very recently. It was a very dry sounding amp and I struggled to get a nice overdriven sound from it, it doesn’t push hard enough to be a good all rounder, even with a Screamer in the front it still felt like it was half way to achieving a great lead tone. To me these amps sound far to nuts and bolts for my taste. Either way like them or not ( I don’t knock you if you do, amps are a very personal choice) don’t discount other brands as there are lots of better amps I think for similar money.

So I was wondering from a tone point of view, does the 50W head any different from the 20W Head? Since the price is close, I wouldn’t mind to get the 50W is the tone is so much better and closer from the JTM45-Plexi tone. But if the tone is the same, I would prefer to stick with the 20W since it will already be more than I need. Any inputs on that would be welcomed (maybe a compare video?). Thanks!

      Hey Phil, thanks for your comment. The 20 and the 50 watts heads will sound pretty much the same, just on different volumes. If you want the gainier Plexi crunch, get the 20, if you want more headroom and wish to actually achieve a semi-clean sound with let’s say a humbucker guitar, go for the 50. Be aware of the brutal volume of the 50w head though. If you want it that crunchy as in the video, you will get thrown out of every band on this planet. 😂 cheers buddy!

      @Spidouz 6 лет назад +2

      Kris Barocsi thanks a lot Kris! Yes that’s what I thought, I’m gonna stick with the choice of the 20W Head then... I already have a great clean amp with high headroom (Two-Rock), so I think the 20W will fit better. I asked because I couldn’t see anywhere if the Preamp were the same or if they were any differences in tones (like it can happen like for instance the Fender Bassbreaker line where every amp is a different one, and not just more watts). Thanks again for the info!
      PS: also I wanted to say I love that you have the dbmeter on your videos. You’re the only channel to do that but it’s very crucial to figure out the volume in different settings, since cameras generally level the audio and we can’t really figure out without it. Thanks for that too...

So for me it would be more logic that i can put 2x 8ohm cabs on the 2x 8Ohm Output Jacks. But its not the Main thing. I read in comments, internet, magazines etc. that when you put 2 cabs on the stereo outs of the amp, that 1 isn't working and the sound only comes out of 1 cab. There was a manufacturing mistake or something else in thousands marshall origins. But if you play only with 1 cab/mono, who cares about that stereo bug. ;)

    You were playing the STrat with the 58 and it had a LOT more high end than the Origin did, very noticeable, were the tone knobs set the same? If not, the 58 sounded so much better.

      chris tian I have a 1987x plexi with a few mods and played an Origin 50 combo today at a store. It was lacking the brutality of a plexi and had no versatility at all. It had a lit of static hiss going regardless of the volume or if the guitar was even plugged in.
      There are much better amps for same price, and I really wanted to like this amp.
      The Fender bassbreaker series are way better, and the 40CR gets really great reviews too.

      Zombieman ok thx. but it is worth the extra$$ to purchase the silver jubilee mini? tried my friends hot rod devile. and for my ears still cant get away with marshall tones.

    • @zombieman9509
      @zombieman9509 6 лет назад

      chris tian If you want the marshall tones, the mini jubilee should be great. It is basically a jcm800 anniversary model. Perfect for GnR sound, but be aware that the speakers you use have a huge impact on how it sounds. Vintage30 is a great match for the jubilee, and for a more 70's sound use G12M speakers.
      Personally I buy used gear often, and that way you could maybe get a JVM205 or similar 2x12 combo for the same price as a mini jubilee head..

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  5 лет назад +1

      Both the Origin and the DSL series have their own thing going on. The DSL's are more like a JCM800 / JCM900, and the Origins will give you a Plexi-type flair. Two different worlds, for different kind of players. If you're not using pedals, the DSL's are way more versatile for sure. On the other hand, if you're a pedal guy and need a nice and rich clean sound, the Origin is the better choice. //cheers, Kris

      I have both the katana head and the origin 50 head. I play the katana more. The katana clean is almost fenderish. The origin 50 sounds amazing pushed with a OCD or a tone bender type pedal but you really have to crank it the origin clean is kinda dull to my ears. I run them both into Mesa V30 recto 2x12 closed back cabs. For me I like the katana a bit more

In my opinion, no one could get a reasonable idea what these amps are capable of because of the limited playing abilities of the demonstrators. *"Marshall Origin - the better 'Plexi'"?*
    Are you kidding me? - How can a budgetal priced " made in Vietnam"-thing produced in chord-work on assembly lines by underpaid vietnam workers be able to catch the sonic spirit of the true plexi-amp-legend?-
    - This "Origin" doesn't even have a "standby" switch for the poor tubes! (Ĺaughable!) - I have checked the amp by myself (one of my students bought one...) ...the "Origin" sound is *lightyears away from that of a real Plexi- Marshall* - for a little more money you better may buy - just for example - a small "Orange" amp and get 100% more of the true "british sound" that this type of amps are loved and well-known for!
    By the way - the "origin" reviews in some magazines are a fantastic example how unreliable those musicians' magazin reviews are! - I compared two reviews of the "Marshall Origine 50 H" in two well-known and established "musicians magazins' ( I won't mention the names)..Magazin one praised the "Origin" as if it was the best classical tube amp ever made, the second one panned the amp to pieces!
    - How can this be? I mean, if the amp is made well, then there couldn't have been such a gaping difference in the estimations of the critics, or what? -
    To me, it looks more and more, that certain magazines have certain interests to cheer up certain products for reasons that I don't know, but maybe at least it has to do with money....
    Anyway....to me the "Marshall Origin" is a - lets not say "cheap" - lets say "inexpensive" tube amp of no ravishing production quality. If you take the time, to adjust the controls of the amp a bit in the right way, it has an, let's say, "acceptable" sound (not more!) , but does not even reach close to the true "Plexi" legends, as f.e the MRT1959 - and - in my opinion - at this price level (around 500 bucks) there are other tube amps from factories, that perhaps don't have the "Marshall"-logo, but are much closer to the original and more versatile in sound and of a better product quality
    - for the same (or even less) money!
    If you want my opinion - there are people, who play with the desire of young, perhaps yet unexperienced guitar-players, who can be fascinated by a product, that LOOKS LIKE (!) being built in the tradition of a legendary amp-line without being expensive - but in my eyes, the relevant features of the "Origin" don't meet the expectations when the chips are down.
    If you want to pay all your bucks just for having a "Marshall"-logo on your amp...okay, thats your decision, but I fear, in THIS case you probably have got something completly wrong.., something that is central in connection with the search for a good sound ...
    All said ...,
    Stay healthy, all the best,
    Andy
